Rosie Amber’s Friday Five Challenge, involves taking only five minutes to choose a book cover which appeals instantly. So take a few minutes, pour yourself a coffee…..and have a browse.
In today’s online shopping age, readers often base their buying decisions from small postage stamp size book covers (Thumb-nails), a quick glance at the book description and the review. How much time do they really spend making that buying decision?
AUTHORS – You often only have seconds to get a reader to buy your book, is your book cover and book bio up to it?
My Friday Five Challenge is this….. IN ONLY FIVE MINUTES….
1) Go to any online book supplier,
2) Randomly choose a category,
3) Speed through the book covers, choose one which has instantly appealed to your eye,
4) Read the book Bio/ Description for this book, and any other details.
5) If there are reviews, check out a couple,
6) Make an instant decision, would you BUY or PASS?
This week I looked under the New Releases: Coming Soon heading and this caught my eye immediately….Follow You Home by Mark Edwards.
The cover image was attention grabbing and struck me as quite mysterious and a little creepy. The book description is as follows;
The page-turning psychological thriller from the author of #1 bestsellers The Magpies and Because She Loves Me.
It was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime, a final adventure before settling down. But after a perfect start, an encounter with a young couple on a night train forces Daniel and Laura to cut their dream trip short and flee home.
Back in London, Daniel and Laura vow never to talk about what happened that night. But as they try to fit into their old lives again, they realise they are in terrible danger—and that their nightmare is just beginning…
Number of pages: 402
Kindle price: £3.98/$6.30
I do like the sound of the description, and the ‘about the author section’ states Mark Edwards writes psychological thrillers in which scary things happen to ordinary people. Mark Edwards has had a couple of #1 best sellers. There are no reviews for Follow You Home (it was just released on the 30th June), apart from a few of the editorial types, all positive (of course) and give the impression of a scary read. So, with the extra time I began to read the excerpt from the ‘look inside’ option. And I liked it. The Kindle price is too high, the paperback is priced at only £5.99 and would be worth the extra for a hard copy.
Would I BUY or PASS? I’d BUY (the paperback).

Ooh sounds really scary, not sure if I can read that, but plenty of people DO love thrillers. High price going for the already captive readers of this author and paying for the behind the scenes marketing, book cover spot on for this genre.

I’d buy too–but maybe NOT read on the train at night.

I’d buy too – via Kindle Unlimited, I’m ashamed to say! I prefer to read on my Kindle so an inexpensive paperback is no draw. I’d buy properly (not via KU!) if it was 1.99! Looks great. I think the author might be one of Julia’s clients, I’m not sure.

I like having books around the house so I don’t mind buying if the Kindle price is too high.

This looks really good – I’d buy too (if i didn’t already have a huge pile of books teetering next to the bed and so many on my Kindle!)

Love a good thriller. This sounds it fits the bill, but you’re right about the price. Might as well buy the paper copy. ❤
